Billy Paul

Billy Paul was an American soul and jazz-inflected vocalist from Philadelphia, one of the defining voices of the Philadelphia International Records sound in the 1970s. Working closely with producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, he brought a jazz singer's phrasing and improvisational freedom to soul music, setting him apart from more straightforward R&B contemporaries of the era.

His signature hit «Me and Mrs. Jones», a smoldering tale of an extramarital affair, topped the charts in 1972 and won a Grammy Award, becoming one of the defining Philly soul records of the decade. He continued to explore socially conscious and romantic themes across albums that mixed lush orchestration with his distinctive, conversational vocal delivery, including cuts like «Let’s Make A Baby» and «Thanks For Saving My Life».

Though he never fully replicated the commercial peak of «Me and Mrs. Jones», Paul remained an influential figure in soul music, respected for bringing genuine jazz sensibility into the Philadelphia sound and for tackling mature, narrative-driven songwriting at a time when much of soul radio favored simpler themes.
