Big L

Big L, born Lamont Coleman in Harlem, New York, was an American rapper widely regarded as one of the most gifted lyricists and punchline writers in hip-hop history. He came up as a battle rapper on Harlem streets before being taken under the wing of Lord Finesse in 1990, joining the D.I.T.C. crew and making early appearances on records by Showbiz & A.G. and Diamond D. He signed with Columbia Records in 1992.

His debut album, «Lifestylez ov da Poor & Dangerous» (1995), is considered a classic of mid-90s East Coast hardcore rap, praised for its dense wordplay, dark humor and vivid, unflinching depictions of street life. Big L also founded the group Children of the Corn, whose members included future stars Ma$e and Cam'ron, and was closely tied to the D.I.T.C. collective alongside Lord Finesse, Diamond D, Showbiz and A.G.

Big L was murdered in Harlem in February 1999 at age 24, cutting short a career whose full commercial potential was never realized during his lifetime; a posthumous album, «The Big Picture», followed in 2000. His influence on technical, punchline-driven rap is still cited by many later MCs, and freestyles and archival tracks like «Da Graveyard», «Ebonics» and «Danger Zone» remain touchstones for students of lyricism.
