Barry White

Barry White, born Barry Eugene Carter in Galveston, Texas, was a singer, songwriter and producer whose deep, velvety bass-baritone voice made him one of the defining figures of 1970s soul and disco-era R&B. After a difficult childhood and youth, he found direction through music, first playing bass and working as a writer-producer, notably helping shape the sound of the vocal trio Love Unlimited before launching his own recording career.

His solo breakthrough came with lush, orchestral productions built around slow grooves, string arrangements and his own spoken-word interludes, epitomized by hits like «I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little More Baby», «You're the First, the Last, My Everything» and «Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe». He also achieved success with the Love Unlimited Orchestra, most notably the instrumental «Love's Theme», one of the signature disco-era orchestral hits.

White's romantic, seductive style and richly layered production earned him the nickname «the Walrus of Love» and made him one of the best-selling R&B artists of his generation, with a catalogue of gold and platinum records.
