Babyface

Kenneth «Babyface» Edmonds is an American singer, songwriter and producer who became one of the defining architects of R&B sound from the late 1980s through the 1990s and beyond. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, he got his nickname from funk legend Bootsy Collins while playing in his backing band, and went on to work with groups including Manchild and The Deele before launching a solo and production career. His partnership with L.A. Reid produced a run of hits that rivaled the work of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, shaping the smooth, melodic template of contemporary R&B.

As a producer and songwriter, Babyface wrote and produced more than twenty number-one hits for artists such as Whitney Houston, Boyz II Men, Toni Braxton and Karyn White, blending gospel-inflected vocal arrangements with polished, radio-ready grooves. His own recordings, including songs like «Whip Appeal» and «Soon As I Get Home», showcase a warm, understated vocal style built around tender balladry and quiet-storm sensibilities rather than flashy vocal runs.
