Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin (1942–2018) was an American singer known as the Queen of Soul, whose voice defined the sound of soul and R&B music for more than five decades. Born in Memphis and raised in Detroit, she grew up singing gospel in the church of her father, the prominent minister C. L. Franklin, an upbringing that shaped the emotional power and vocal range she later brought to secular music. After early recordings for Columbia produced only modest success, her move to Atlantic Records in 1967 triggered a remarkable run of hits that redefined American popular music.

Her version of «Respect», originally written by Otis Redding, became an anthem of both civil rights and feminist movements and remains one of the most iconic recordings in American music history.
