About the artist
Anthony Hamilton is an American R&B singer-songwriter and record producer known for his warm, gravelly, soul-steeped voice. After years of working as a background vocalist and writer for other artists, he broke through as a solo star with his second studio album, Comin’ from Where I’m From (2003), which went platinum on the strength of its title track and the follow-up single «Charlene».
Hamilton's sound draws heavily on classic Southern soul and gospel traditions, updated with contemporary R&B production, and his songwriting often centers on themes of struggle, faith, redemption, and everyday Black life. This rootsy, old-school sensibility set him apart in an era dominated by more polished, pop-oriented R&B, earning him a reputation as one of the genre's most authentic voices.
He reached an even wider audience with «Freedom», a duet with indie soul singer Elayna Boynton featured on the soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained, which the pair co-wrote. Across a long career he has continued to release acclaimed albums and collaborate with artists across R&B, soul, and hip-hop, cementing his status as a respected elder statesman of contemporary soul music.
