About the artist
After 7 is an American R&B vocal group formed in Indianapolis, Indiana, consisting of brothers Melvin and Kevon Edmonds alongside their friend Keith Mitchell. The group coalesced in 1987 after Melvin and Kevon's brother, songwriter and producer Kenneth «Babyface» Edmonds, brought them to Los Angeles as his own career was taking off. Babyface, working with his production partner L.A. Reid, wrote and produced most of the material on the group's self-titled 1989 debut album, which went platinum.
That debut spawned the crossover pop hit «Heat of the Moment» along with two number-one R&B singles, «Ready or Not» and «Can't Stop», both of which also cracked the pop Top 10. After 7 continued their run with the 1991 hit «Nights Like This», featured in the film The Five Heartbeats. Their later albums, Takin' My Time (1992) and Reflections (1995), saw less involvement from Babyface and Reid but still achieved gold status behind singles like «Baby, I'm for Real / Natural High» and «'Til You Do Me Right».
The group's smooth, harmony-driven sound became emblematic of the New Jack Swing-adjacent R&B era of the late '80s and early '90s. After 7 disbanded in 1997 amid label disputes with Virgin Records, with Kevon Edmonds later pursuing a solo career.
