Ace Spectrum

Ace Spectrum were an American R&B vocal group active in the 1970s, known for lush, harmony-driven soul music built on interlocking lead vocals rather than a single frontman. Signed to Atlantic Records, the group released their debut album Inner Spectrum, which found a solid audience on the R&B charts and produced the single «Don’t Send Nobody Else», their best-known crossover moment on the Billboard Hot 100.

Their sound sat within the mid-1970s soul tradition alongside other vocal groups of the era, distinguished by tightly woven harmonies — showcased especially on «I Don’t Want To Play Around» — and a warm, romantic lyrical focus typical of the period’s R&B. Their follow-up album, Low Rent-Rendezvous, built on that momentum and reached the R&B albums chart, cementing the group as a modest but respected presence in soul music of the time.

A third album failed to replicate that success, and the group disbanded by the mid-to-late 1970s without a lasting mainstream breakthrough. Despite their relatively brief run, Ace Spectrum remain a notable footnote in 1970s soul for their harmony-first approach and their catalogue of smooth, melodic R&B.
