Sobre o artista
The Mountain Goats é um projeto de folk-rock indie fundado e liderado pelo cantor e compositor John Darnielle, originário de Claremont, Califórnia, e posteriormente radicado em Durham, na Carolina do Norte. Durante boa parte de sua carreira inicial, a banda foi essencialmente um veículo solo para Darnielle, conhecido por gravar em um gravador Panasonic barato e por uma produção lo-fi extraordinariamente prolífica e repleta de letras densas.
Com o tempo, o grupo se transformou em uma banda completa, com o baixista Peter Hughes, o baterista Jon Wurster e o multi-instrumentista Matt Douglas formando a formação estável desde o álbum Beat the Champ, de 2015. Darnielle também colaborou com figuras do indie rock como Franklin Bruno e John Vanderslice. O som da banda evoluiu de gravações caseiras cruas para uma produção de estúdio mais completa e refinada, mas as letras literárias e centradas em personagens de Darnielle permaneceram constantes.
Músicas como «No Children», «This Year» e «Up the Wolves» estão entre as mais conhecidas, admiradas por combinarem melodias cativantes com narrativas implacáveis, muitas vezes sombriamente cômicas, sobre dependência, resiliência e vida em pequenas cidades. Faixas como «The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton» e «Going to Georgia» refletem essa mistura de humor, empatia e detalhe narrativo que tornou a banda uma presença distinta e influente no folk-rock indie.
