Kool & the Gang

Kool & the Gang are an American band formed in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1964, originally under the name the Jazziacs. Rooted in jazz, the group evolved through funk, R&B, and eventually disco and pop-funk, becoming one of the most consistently successful acts in American popular music across five decades. Early instrumental hits like «Jungle Boogie», «Hollywood Swinging», and «Summer Madness» established their reputation for tight horn arrangements and infectious grooves.

The band reached its commercial peak in the early 1980s after adding lead vocalist James «J.T.» Taylor, which brought a more accessible pop-funk sound to the fore. This era produced some of their most enduring songs, including «Celebration», «Get Down On It», «Ladies' Night», «Cherish», and «Joanna», tracks that remain staples of weddings, parties, and film soundtracks worldwide. «Celebration» in particular became a cultural touchstone, played at major public and sporting events.

Kool & the Gang's catalog bridges jazz musicianship with dancefloor accessibility, and their rhythm section and horn work have been widely sampled in hip-hop and R&B. Decades after their commercial peak, the group continues to tour and remains a defining name in funk and soul music.
