James Brown, conhecido como o Padrinho do Soul, foi uma das figuras mais influentes da música americana, cantor, líder de banda e dançarino cujas inovações moldaram o soul, o funk e, mais tarde, o hip-hop. Nascido na Carolina do Sul e criado em Augusta, Geórgia, ele saiu da pobreza para se tornar um dos performers ao vivo mais eletrizantes do século 20, acompanhado por décadas pelos Famous Flames e os J.B.'s.
Brown teve seu grande sucesso com «Please, Please, Please» nos anos 1950, mas sua inovação mais radical veio em meados dos anos 1960, quando reduziu as canções a grooves rítmicos, transformando cada instrumento em uma voz percussiva — um modelo que praticamente inventou o funk em faixas como «Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine» e «The Payback».
