Santana

Carlos Santana is a guitarist and bandleader born in Autlán de Navarro, Jalisco, Mexico, who rose to prominence in the late 1960s with his self-titled band Santana. Raised in a musical family and later based in the San Francisco Bay Area, he became one of the defining figures of the era's rock scene, playing an unforgettable set at the original Woodstock festival in 1969 that helped launch the band nationally.

Santana's signature sound fuses blues-rock guitar phrasing with Latin American and African rhythmic textures, driven by congas and timbales alongside a traditional rock rhythm section. Early hits like «Evil Ways», «Black Magic Woman» and «Oye Cómo Va» (a Tito Puente cover) established this hybrid style, blending psychedelic rock improvisation with Afro-Latin dance grooves in a way few American bands attempted at the time.

After years of steady work and stylistic exploration, Santana experienced a massive career resurgence with the 1999 album Supernatural, featuring collaborations with a new generation of artists; the single «Smooth» with Rob Thomas and «Maria Maria» became global hits and brought his guitar work to an entirely new audience. Over his career he has won multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards and is widely regarded as one of the most influential guitarists in rock history.
