Engelbert Humperdinck es el nombre artístico de Arnold George Dorsey, un cantante pop inglés nacido en 1936 en Madrás, India británica, y criado en Leicester tras la mudanza de su familia a Inglaterra. Al principio actuaba como Gerry Dorsey, hasta que su representante Gordon Mills le propuso adoptar el nombre del célebre compositor romántico alemán autor de la ópera Hansel y Gretel, un cambio que impulsó su carrera a mediados de los años sesenta. Su voz de barítono y su estilo pop orquestal y melódico lo convirtieron en uno de los grandes crooners de la época, cercano en popularidad a Tom Jones, con quien compartió representante y una amistosa rivalidad.
Su repertorio se apoyó en baladas románticas que combinaban pop, easy listening y adult contemporary, con influencias latinas y continentales, como en «Quando Quando Quando» y «Spanish Eyes». Éxitos como «Release Me», «The Last Waltz» y «A Man Without Love» dominaron las listas europeas durante décadas y lo convirtieron en una figura central del pop romántico, con seguidores fieles desde el Reino Unido hasta Filipinas.
Su carrera se ha extendido por más de cincuenta años, con giras y grabaciones hasta etapas avanzadas de su vida.
