Bob Dylan, nacido Robert Zimmerman en 1941, surgió de la escena folk de Minnesota antes de trasladarse al Greenwich Village de Nueva York a principios de los años sesenta, donde se convirtió en una voz definitoria del renacimiento folk estadounidense. Apoyándose en las tradiciones del folk, el blues y el country, construyó una obra arraigada en una narrativa vívida y una lírica densa y literaria que lo distinguió casi de inmediato de sus contemporáneos.
Sus primeras canciones de protesta, entre ellas «Blowin' in the Wind» y «The Times They Are A-Changin'», lo convirtieron en un emblema de la agitación social y política de los sesenta, aunque siempre rechazó la etiqueta de portavoz de su generación. Su decisión de electrificarse a mediados de los sesenta, culminando en canciones como «Like a Rolling Stone» y «Subterranean Homesick Blues», provocó polémica entre los puristas del folk, pero resultó decisiva para ampliar las posibilidades de la composición dentro del rock.
