About the artist
Wiley, born Richard Cowie in Bow, East London, is widely credited as the «Godfather of Grime», one of the originators of the genre that fused UK garage, jungle and dancehall influences into a distinctly London sound built on stripped-back, aggressive beats and rapid-fire MCing. He came up through pirate radio and the East London sound-system scene in the early 2000s, helping to shape a movement that would later influence artists such as Dizzee Rascal, Skepta, Chip and Tinchy Stryder.
His 2004 debut album «Treddin' on Thin Ice» is regarded as a foundational record of grime, blending his production instincts with sharp, London-accented lyricism. Over a career spanning more than a decade he moved between underground grime and mainstream pop-leaning singles, scoring commercial hits while remaining closely tied to the scene's clash culture and freestyle traditions, including his long-running rivalry and collaborations within the Roll Deep collective he helped found.
Wiley continued releasing prolifically into the 2010s and 2020s, with records like «Boasty Gang – The Album» showing his enduring presence in UK rap and grime. His influence is felt less through chart success than through the sound and attitude he helped establish, which continues to define grime's sonic template.
