Warren G

Warren G, born Warren Griffin III in Long Beach, California, is a foundational figure in West Coast hip-hop and one of the architects of the G-funk sound. He came up alongside childhood friends Nate Dogg and Snoop Dogg as part of the group 213, a formative unit that shaped much of the laid-back, funk-and-soul-sampling style that would define mid-1990s West Coast rap.

Warren G's breakthrough came with his 1994 single «Regulate», featuring Nate Dogg, a smooth, narrative-driven track built around a sample of Michael McDonald's «I Keep Forgettin'» that became a defining record of the G-funk era and of his debut album Regulate... G Funk Era. His production style favors mellow basslines, live instrumentation, and melodic hooks, drawing on the jazz, funk, and soul records he grew up with rather than the more aggressive gangsta rap aesthetic of some contemporaries.

As both rapper and producer, Warren G helped popularize G-funk beyond Dr. Dre's immediate circle, with tracks like «This D.J.» and «Do You See» further cementing his storytelling approach. His enduring influence on West Coast hip-hop's sound and his close ties to the Long Beach scene have made him a respected elder statesman of the genre.
