About the artist
Vybz Kartel, born Adidja Azim Palmer on January 7, 1976, is one of the most influential and controversial figures in modern dancehall music. Emerging from Jamaica in the late 1990s and rising to dominance through the 2000s and into the 2010s, he became known for a prolific work rate, a distinctive nasal vocal delivery, and lyrics that ranged from explicit and provocative to sharply observational about street life, sexuality, and social commentary. He recorded under his own Adidjahiem label alongside producer Notnice and built a large stable of proteges known as the Portmore Empire, shaping much of the sound of contemporary dancehall.
His catalog includes hits such as «Fever», «Clarks», and «Romping Shop», tracks that showcase his ability to move between raunchy, party-oriented dancehall and slower, melodic riddims. His influence extended beyond music into fashion and slang, with his skin-bleaching and flamboyant style sparking wide cultural debate in Jamaica.
In 2014, Palmer was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of an associate, a case that drew international attention and has remained a subject of ongoing legal appeals. Despite incarceration, he has continued to release new music, maintaining a dedicated fanbase and cementing his status as one of the most commercially successful and stylistically imitated dancehall artists of his generation, with lasting influence on Caribbean and diaspora music.
