UGK

UGK — Underground Kingz — was a Texas rap duo formed by Bun B and the late Pimp C, whose partnership became foundational to the sound of Southern hip-hop. Beginning with the 1992 EP The Southern Way and the album Too Hard to Swallow, the duo built a reputation through the 1990s with releases like Super Tight, which reached the Billboard 200, and the 1996 album Ridin' Dirty, widely regarded as their defining work and a cornerstone record of Southern rap.

UGK's music combined slow, funk- and soul-sampled production with laid-back Texas drawl delivery, pioneering a regional style that would later influence a generation of Southern artists. Their career was marked by both commercial breakthroughs and setbacks, including delays around the album Dirty Money and Pimp C's incarceration in the early 2000s. Following his release, the duo reached new commercial heights with the self-titled Underground Kingz, a double album that topped the Billboard charts and stands as a critical and commercial peak.

Pimp C's death in December 2007 cut the group's momentum short, and Bun B completed their final album, UGK 4 Life, largely using verses Pimp C had already recorded. The duo's collaboration with Outkast on «Int'l Players Anthem (I Choose You)» remains one of the most celebrated posse cuts in hip-hop history, cementing UGK's legacy as pillars of Southern rap.
