Three 6 Mafia

Three 6 Mafia is a hardcore hip-hop group from Memphis, Tennessee, formed in the early 1990s around producers and rappers DJ Paul and Juicy J, joined over the years by members including Lord Infamous, Gangsta Boo, Crunchy Black, and Koopsta Knicca. Emerging under earlier names before settling on Three 6 Mafia, the group became foundational architects of the dark, horrorcore-tinged strand of Southern rap, pairing eerie, minimalist beats with menacing, chant-like vocals. Their 1995 debut, Mystic Stylez, is widely credited as a blueprint for a lo-fi horrorcore sound that would later resurface in the work of artists such as SpaceGhostPurrp, Denzel Curry, and $uicideboy$. The group is also historically credited with popularizing crunk, the bass-heavy, shout-driven style that would come to dominate Southern club rap. Their commercial breakthrough came with the Hustle & Flow soundtrack cut «Hard Out Here for a Pimp», which won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2005, a landmark moment for hip-hop in mainstream film culture. Beyond their own catalog, including hits like «Stay Fly» and «Sippin' on Some Syrup», Three 6 Mafia helped launch the careers of Memphis-area artists such as Project Pat, Frayser Boy, and La Chat, cementing their role as a central hub of the city's rap scene.
