The Underachievers

The Underachievers are an American hip-hop duo from the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, composed of rappers Issa Gold and AKTHESAVIOR. Emerging in the early 2010s alongside a wave of Flatbush-based artists, the group carved out a niche with a psychedelic, introspective strain of rap built on dense wordplay, spiritual and metaphysical themes, and a fondness for third-eye and consciousness-expanding imagery. Their sound blends boom-bap foundations with hazy, atmospheric production, setting them apart from more mainstream hip-hop of the era.

The duo first gained attention with singles like «Gold Soul Theory» and «Herb Shuttles», released ahead of their debut mixtape Indigoism in 2013, which became a cult favorite in underground hip-hop circles. They followed with the mixtape The Lords of Flatbush and their debut studio album Cellar Door: Terminus Ut Exordium in 2014, both of which helped cement their reputation as leading voices of a new, cerebral wave of New York rap. Their second album, Evermore: The Art of Duality, arrived in 2015 and continued to chart on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop and Rap Albums lists.

The Underachievers are closely associated with fellow Flatbush act Flatbush Zombies, with whom they formed the supergroup Clockwork Indigo, releasing a joint EP together. This collaboration, along with subsequent projects like It Happened in Flatbush and Renaissance, reinforced their standing within Brooklyn’s alternative rap scene and their influence on the broader psychedelic and spiritually-inflected rap subgenre.
