About the artist
The Handsome Family is a husband-and-wife duo, Brett and Rennie Sparks, whose music blends alternative country, Americana and gothic folk into dark, literary songwriting. Formed in Chicago in the early 1990s, the pair later relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico, a desert landscape that has colored much of their later work. Brett writes and performs the music while Rennie is the primary lyricist, crafting narratives full of murder ballads, natural disasters, insects, ghosts and quiet domestic despair delivered with deadpan humor.
The duo built a devoted cult following across more than a dozen studio albums, standing apart from mainstream country through their combination of drum machines, banjo, pump organ and Brett's deep baritone. Their song «Far from Any Road», from the 2003 album Singing Bones, reached a much wider audience after being used as the theme song for the television series True Detective, introducing their eerie, atmospheric sound to a global audience.
Beyond that breakout moment, The Handsome Family have remained a defining act of the alt-country and weird-Americana scene, influencing songwriters drawn to combining traditional folk and country instrumentation with unsettling, poetic storytelling. Tracks like «So Much Wine» and «Weightless Again» have been widely covered by other artists, cementing the duo's reputation as songwriters' songwriters even as they stayed largely outside the commercial mainstream.
