The Dead South

The Dead South are a Canadian string band from Regina, Saskatchewan, known for fusing bluegrass instrumentation — banjo, mandolin, cello, and guitar — with the raw energy of rock and punk. Formed in the early 2010s, the group built an unconventional lineup that deliberately omits drums and fiddle, relying instead on percussive strumming and tight vocal harmonies to drive their sound. Frontman Nate Hilts' gravelly baritone anchors songs that mix dark humor, murder-ballad storytelling, and rowdy singalong energy.

The band gained massive international attention through the viral success of «In Hell I'll Be in Good Company», which became a streaming phenomenon years after its original release, introducing millions of listeners to their genre-bending take on old-time American folk traditions. Their catalog includes standout tracks like «Banjo Odyssey», «That Bastard Son», and «Boots», all showcasing their knack for combining breakneck picking with theatrical, story-driven lyrics.

Working with producer Jimmy Nutt for their album Sugar & Joy marked a turning point, recorded outside their home base for the first time and refining their sound into something tighter and more polished while retaining the chaotic charm of their live shows.
