About the artist
The Crooklyn Dodgers were not a permanent group but a rotating hip-hop collective assembled specifically to record theme songs for Spike Lee films set in Brooklyn. The name plays on the borough's old baseball team, the Brooklyn Dodgers, and on Lee's own nickname for his home turf. Rather than being a fixed lineup, each incarnation brought together different established New York rappers for a one-off single tied to a movie soundtrack.
The first lineup appeared in 1994 for the film «Crooklyn», featuring Special Ed, Masta Ace, Buckshot and Chubb Rock, delivering the track «Return of the Crooklyn Dodgers» (a nod to an earlier Crooklyn Dodgers cut). A second incarnation formed in 1995 for the soundtrack of Lee's «Clockers», this time featuring Chubb Rock, O.C. and Jeru the Damaja on the song «Crooklyn». A third version reunited in 2007.
Across all three versions, the songs share a common thread beyond their cinematic origin: they are steeped in Brooklyn pride and street-level commentary on urban life in New York City, giving voice to the same social realities Spike Lee was portraying on screen. The project stands as a notable example of hip-hop soundtrack collaboration in 1990s New York.
