About the artist

The Coup is a politically radical hip-hop group from Oakland, California, formed in 1991 by rapper Boots Riley and DJ Pam the Funkstress. Rooted in the Bay Area’s activist and Black Panther-influenced culture, the group built a sound that fused old-school funk breaks, P-Funk grooves, and dense, narrative-driven lyricism with an explicitly Marxist, anti-capitalist political stance rare even within hip-hop’s conscious wing.

Early albums like Kill My Landlord and Genocide & Juice established their satirical, storytelling approach, but it was Steal This Album and especially Party Music that cemented their reputation, the latter infamous for an original cover depicting the World Trade Center towers exploding, pulled just before September 11, 2001. Songs such as «5 Million Ways to Kill a C.E.O.» and «Dig It!» exemplify their mix of humor, class-conscious anger, and funk-driven production.

Boots Riley, also known for founding Street Sweeper Social Club with Tom Morello and for writing and directing the film Sorry to Bother You, remained the group’s creative core alongside Pam the Funkstress until her death in 2017. The Coup’s work continues to be cited as a landmark fusion of danceable funk-rap and uncompromising political critique.
