The Civil Wars

The Civil Wars were an American folk-country duo formed in 2008 by Joy Williams and John Paul White, who met at a Nashville songwriting workshop after each had already pursued solo careers. Their chemistry was immediate, built on close harmonies and a stripped-down acoustic sound that leaned on tension and restraint rather than polish, and their partnership quickly moved from songwriting sessions into a full musical project.

Their debut album, «Barton Hollow», released in 2011, established them as one of the era's defining Americana acts, earning Grammy Awards and widespread critical acclaim for its spare arrangements and emotionally charged, often melancholic songwriting. The title track and songs like «Poison & Wine» showcased their signature interplay of male and female voices trading intimacy and conflict, a dynamic that became central to their identity. They also collaborated notably with Taylor Swift on «Safe & Sound» for The Hunger Games soundtrack, broadening their audience beyond the Americana scene.

Despite their acclaim, the duo's onstage chemistry masked well-documented interpersonal tensions, and they went on hiatus before eventually disbanding in 2014, following a self-titled second album. Their brief catalog remains influential in the folk and Americana revival of the 2010s, admired for its emotional directness and vocal interplay.
