The Chicks

The Chicks, formerly known as Dixie Chicks, are an American country trio formed in Dallas, Texas in 1989. The group’s classic lineup, solidified in 1995, consists of lead singer Natalie Maines alongside sisters Emily Robison on banjo and dobro and Martie Maguire on fiddle and mandolin. Their fusion of traditional bluegrass instrumentation with polished country-pop songwriting brought them massive mainstream success in the late 1990s and 2000s.

Breakthrough albums like Wide Open Spaces and Fly produced enduring hits such as «Wide Open Spaces», «Goodbye Earl» and «Travelin’ Soldier», blending sharp storytelling with the trio’s tight vocal harmonies and instrumental virtuosity. Natalie Maines’s 2003 remarks criticizing the Iraq War sparked major backlash from country radio, a controversy the group addressed directly on their Grammy-sweeping album Taking the Long Way, led by the single «Not Ready to Make Nice».

In 2020 the group dropped “Dixie” from its name amid a broader reckoning with the word’s Confederate associations, rebranding as The Chicks and releasing the album Gaslighter, which continued their tradition of candid, personal songwriting. Across their career, The Chicks have been recognized as one of the most successful and outspoken acts in country music, known for pairing instrumental skill with willingness to confront political and personal controversy head-on.
