About the artist
The Beatnuts are a hip-hop production duo from Corona, Queens, New York, formed by Psycho Les and JuJu in the early 1990s. Originally a trio with rapper Al' Tariq, the group released the EP «Intoxicated Demons» in 1993 before Tariq departed, and Les and JuJu continued as the core duo through their self-titled debut «The Beatnuts: Street Level» in 1994. They built a reputation as one of the most respected boom-bap production teams of the era, favoring dusty samples, jazz-inflected loops, and a raw, unpolished East Coast sound that stood apart from the more radio-friendly rap of the mid-90s.
The Beatnuts crossed into wider recognition with singles like «Watch Out Now» and «Off the Books», the latter featuring Big Pun and Cuban Link, both of which reached the Billboard Hot 100 and became staples of underground and mainstream hip-hop radio alike. Their catalogue includes «No Escapin' This» and other tracks steeped in gritty, sample-heavy production that influenced a generation of East Coast producers.
Beyond their own records, Les and JuJu became sought-after producers, crafting beats for artists including Common, Fat Joe, Ice-T, Akon, and Capone-N-Noreaga. Their work sits at the intersection of the golden-era New York underground and its production-driven evolution, and they remain a reference point for sample-based hip-hop craftsmanship.
