About the artist
Teriyaki Boyz are a Japanese hip hop collective from Yokohama formed in the early 2000s, bringing together members drawn from established acts in the Japanese scene, including Ilmari and Ryo-z of Rip Slyme, Verbal of m-flo, rapper Wise, and Nigo, founder of the streetwear label A Bathing Ape. That lineup gave the group a distinctive fusion of hip hop, streetwear culture, and playful, genre-crossing production.
Their debut album, «Beef or Chicken», released internationally through Def Jam, assembled an unusually eclectic array of producers spanning hip hop and electronic music, including Daft Punk, DJ Premier, DJ Shadow, The Neptunes, and Cornelius. The Daft Punk-produced lead single «Heartbreaker», built around elements of «Human After All», introduced the group to audiences well beyond Japan and signaled their ambition to bridge Japanese hip pop with Western rap and dance production.
Teriyaki Boyz gained wider international visibility through «Tokyo Drift (Fast & Furious)», featured on The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift soundtrack, which became one of their most recognizable tracks. Over the years the group collaborated with major Western hip hop figures such as Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Pharrell, cementing their reputation as one of the more globally connected acts to emerge from Japan's hip hop scene.
