About the artist
Tear Da Club Up Thugs was a side project of the Memphis hip-hop group Three 6 Mafia, centered on members DJ Paul, Juicy J, Lord Infamous, and Project Pat. Emerging in the mid-to-late 1990s alongside the broader Hypnotize Minds camp, the group extended Three 6 Mafia's signature dark, horrorcore-tinged Memphis sound into raunchier, more explicitly crunk and club-oriented territory, trading some of the occult imagery for aggressive party anthems and hypersexual, confrontational lyricism.
Their output, including songs built around chants and crowd-response hooks, helped popularize the id of Memphis crunk that would later feed into the broader Southern hip-hop explosion of the early 2000s. The project's sound — pitched-down vocal ad-libs, minimal, bass-heavy production, and triplet hi-hats — is now recognized as a direct ancestor of much of contemporary trap and drill production, with DJ Paul and Juicy J's beatmaking from this era frequently cited by later producers.
While never as commercially prominent as the main Three 6 Mafia lineup, Tear Da Club Up Thugs is remembered as a key document of the raw, regional Memphis underground sound before Three 6 Mafia's crossover into mainstream success and eventual Academy Award win. It remains a touchstone for fans tracing the roots of Southern hip-hop's grittier, club-focused strain.
