Sturgill Simpson

Sturgill Simpson is an American singer-songwriter from Jackson, Kentucky, based out of Nashville, Tennessee, and one of the defining figures of the modern neotraditional country and outlaw country movement. Raised in a musical part of eastern Kentucky where playing an instrument was simply part of everyday life rather than a career path, he only began pursuing music professionally around 2012, after years of playing without treating it as his main pursuit.

His 2013 debut, High Top Mountain, established him as a distinctive voice rooted in classic country songwriting, but it was his 2014 follow-up, Metamodern Sounds in Country Music, that brought widespread critical acclaim, praised for pairing traditional twang with psychedelic, philosophically probing lyrics and earning comparisons to genre forebears while carving out a sound very much his own. Songs such as «Turtles All the Way Down» and «Living the Dream» from that period reflect this blend of introspection and classic instrumentation.

Simpson continued to push against genre conventions with A Sailor's Guide to Earth, released in April 2016, a concept album framed as a letter to his son that incorporated horns, strings, and soul influences alongside his country foundation. Tracks like «Call to Arms», «The Promise», «Sea Stories», «Just Let Go», «Long White Line», and «You Can Have The Crown» further illustrate his range across storytelling, social commentary, and heartfelt balladry, solidifying his reputation as an artist unwilling to stay confined to a single lane within country music.
