South Park Mexican

South Park Mexican, born Carlos Coy, is a Houston rapper and producer who rose to prominence in the mid-to-late 1990s as one of the leading voices of the city's independent Southern rap scene. He took his stage name from the South Park neighborhood of Houston, where his family moved when he was a child, and where he began forging the gritty, street-level style that would define his career. He founded Dope House Records, using it to launch his own catalog as well as records by other Houston-area artists, helping build an independent infrastructure outside the major-label system that was typical of the Dirty South scene at the time.

His breakthrough came with the album The 3rd Wish: To Rock the World, whose single «High So High» became a signature hit and introduced his laid-back, melodic take on Southern rap to a wider audience. Musically, SPM blended Chicano rap sensibilities with G-funk-inflected production, slow, bass-heavy beats, and candid, often autobiographical lyrics about life in Houston. Tracks like «I Must Be High», «Mexican Radio», and «Wiggy» showcase this mix of party anthems and introspective street narratives that made him a defining figure of the Houston rap underground.

SPM went on to release a total of eleven studio albums, several of them recorded and released after his 2002 conviction and imprisonment, a fact that has become inseparable from his public legacy. Despite his incarceration, his catalog continued to circulate widely and remains influential within Texas rap circles, cited by later generations of Houston artists as part of the city's foundational independent rap movement.
