Slum Village

Slum Village is a hip-hop group from Detroit, formed in the early 1990s by MCs T3 and Baatin alongside producer-rapper J Dilla, one of the most influential beatmakers in hip-hop history. Their music is defined by Dilla's off-kilter, jazz- and soul-inflected production, laid-back grooves and unpolished, conversational rhymes — a sound that helped shape the Detroit hip-hop scene and influenced countless producers and MCs who followed. Their breakthrough album «Fantastic, Vol. 2» became an underground classic, celebrated for its warm sampling and loose, human feel.

J Dilla left the group in the early 2000s to focus on his solo and production career, and rapper eLZhi joined to keep the group moving forward, contributing to further releases before eventually pursuing his own solo path. The group weathered profound loss, with both Dilla and Baatin passing away years apart, yet continued to record and perform, with T3 remaining the group's constant anchor.

In its later incarnation, Slum Village continued as a duo built around T3 and producer Young RJ, carrying the group's legacy forward while honoring its Dilla-era foundations. Across its various lineups, Slum Village has remained a touchstone of soulful, sample-based hip-hop, respected for its role in shaping the alternative and neo-soul-adjacent rap sound that emerged from Detroit in the 1990s and 2000s.
