Skee-Lo

Skee-Lo, born Antoine Roundtree, is a Chicago-born rapper who rose to fame in the mid-1990s while based on the West Coast. He became a household name almost overnight in the summer of 1995 with «I Wish», a breezy, melodic single built on a distinctive whistled hook and self-deprecating, everyday wishes rather than the harder-edged street narratives that dominated rap radio at the time. The song's music video, directed by Marty Thomas, became an MTV staple and picked up major award nominations, and the track itself was unusual for reaching mainstream audiences without relying on explicit content.

«I Wish» anchored Skee-Lo's debut album of the same name, which earned him two Grammy nominations, one for the album and one for the single, at a moment when gangsta rap dominated the genre's commercial landscape. Its lighthearted, list-of-wishes lyricism and radio-friendly production made it something of an outlier hit, and it has remained a recognizable touchstone of 90s hip-hop pop culture, still frequently sampled and referenced decades later.

Beyond «I Wish», Skee-Lo built a catalog of similarly upbeat, hook-driven tracks such as «The Burger Song» and «Top of the Stairs», and he continued releasing music including «We On!» and «Untouchable» in the years that followed.
