Racionais MC's

Racionais MC's are a Brazilian rap group formed in 1988 in the periphery of São Paulo, made up of Mano Brown, Ice Blue, Edi Rock and KL Jay. They are widely regarded as one of the most important and influential groups in Brazilian hip-hop history, having shaped the genre's language and social role in the country over more than three decades.

Their lyrics center on the lived reality of Brazil's urban peripheries: crime, poverty, racism, drug use and political awareness, delivered in the vernacular of poor communities so as to speak directly and credibly to a young, low-income audience. Albums and tracks such as «Capítulo 4, Versículo 3», «Diário de um Detento» and «Vida Loka» are considered landmarks, combining sparse, heavy production with dense, narrative verses that function almost as spoken testimony.

Despite largely staying outside mainstream media and major festival circuits, and operating primarily from São Paulo's periphery, the group built enormous commercial and cultural reach, with album sales reported in the millions and a lasting influence on generations of Brazilian rappers. Their name is a nod to Tim Maia's album Racional, tying the group to an earlier Brazilian tradition of music with a strong sense of consciousness and identity.
