Quasimoto

Quasimoto, also known as Lord Quas, is the alter ego of producer and rapper Madlib, one of underground hip-hop's most inventive figures. Based in Oxnard, California, Madlib created the character in the late 1990s by slowing down his recording tempo, rapping at that pace, then speeding the tape back up, which produced the helium-pitched, cartoonish voice that defines Quasimoto's sound.

The project is built on dusty, jazz-and-soul-sampling production, loose stream-of-consciousness rhymes, and a psychedelic, lo-fi aesthetic that set it apart from mainstream rap of its era. Quasimoto often trades bars with Madlib's own natural voice within the same song, creating a dialogue between the two personas that became one of the project's signature devices.

The debut album The Unseen (2000), released on Stones Throw Records, established Quasimoto as a cult favorite and remains a touchstone of abstract, beat-driven hip-hop. Follow-ups like The Further Adventures of Lord Quas expanded the universe further. Tracks such as «Return of the Loop Digga» and «Jazz Cats Pt. 1» showcase the deep crate-digging and genre-blurring approach that influenced a generation of producers and rappers working outside conventional song structures.
