Public Enemy

Public Enemy is one of the most influential and politically charged groups in hip-hop history, formed on Long Island, New York, around Chuck D and Flavor Flav, who met at Adelphi University. Their early track «Public Enemy No. 1», created while Chuck D worked at radio station WBAU, led to the group's formation and their 1986 signing to Def Jam Recordings. Rounded out by DJ Terminator X, Professor Griff, and the S1W security unit, Public Enemy became known for Chuck D's forceful, hard-hitting rhymes carrying pro-Black, politically conscious messages, balanced by Flavor Flav's comic energy, all set against dense, sample-heavy production crafted largely by The Bomb Squad.

After their 1987 debut «Yo! Bum Rush the Show», the group released a run of landmark albums that reshaped hip-hop's ambitions: «It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back» in 1988, «Fear of a Black Planet» in 1990, and «Apocalypse 91… The Enemy Strikes Black» in 1991. These records combined dense, chaotic sonic collages with unflinching commentary on race, media, and power in America, helping push hip-hop toward global recognition as both art and political voice.

Anthems like «Fight the Power», «Bring the Noise», and «Don't Believe the Hype» became touchstones far beyond hip-hop, influencing rock, punk, and protest music alike. Public Enemy's uncompromising stance and sonic innovation cemented their place as pioneers who proved rap could be both radical and massively influential on a global scale.
