About the artist
Protoje, born Oje Ken Ollivierre, is a Jamaican reggae singer, songwriter and bandleader from Kingston. His mother is Jamaican vocalist Lorna Bennett, known for her rendition of «Breakfast in Bed», and his father was a calypso performer from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, giving him a musical upbringing steeped in Caribbean tradition.
He emerged in the early 2010s as one of the central figures of the so-called Reggae Revival, a movement that brought roots-conscious, socially engaged reggae back into the spotlight alongside contemporaries such as Chronixx, Kabaka Pyramid and Jah9, with whom he has frequently collaborated on stage and in the studio. His sound blends classic roots reggae instrumentation with modern production, dancehall cadences and hip-hop-influenced lyricism, giving tracks like «Who Knows» and «Resist Not Evil» a contemporary edge without losing reggae's core identity.
Protoje performs with his backing group the Indiggnation Band and founded the In.Digg.Nation Collective, an artistic and business collective that has nurtured younger talents including Sevana and Lila Iké. Songs such as «Kingston Be Wise» and «Protection» reflect his commitment to social commentary, while «Switch It Up» and «No Lipstick» show his range toward more melodic, radio-friendly reggae-pop. He remains one of the most internationally recognized ambassadors of contemporary Jamaican music.
