Popcaan

Popcaan, born Andrae Jay Sutherland in 1988 in Kingston, Jamaica, is one of the defining voices of modern dancehall. He rose to prominence in the late 2000s as a protégé of Vybz Kartel, becoming a key member of the Portmore Empire (often called the Gaza camp) and appearing on Kartel's stage shows and mixtapes before breaking through on his own with tracks like «Clarks» and «Hot Grabba».

After Kartel's incarceration, Popcaan stepped into the role of leading voice for the camp, releasing a string of hit singles and mixtapes such as «Yiy Change» that cemented his reputation across Jamaica and the wider Caribbean diaspora. His melodic, catchy delivery and knack for anthemic hooks helped dancehall cross into new international audiences.

His 2014 debut album Where We Come From, produced largely with Brooklyn-based producer Dre Skull, blended dancehall with electronic and pop textures and introduced him to a broader global audience, including collaborations with artists like Drake and signing ties to Mixpak Records and OVO Sound. Popcaan remains one of the most streamed and influential dancehall artists of his generation, known for songs about street life, love, and Jamaican pride delivered with an unmistakably smooth, sing-song flow.
