About the artist
Pop Smoke, born Bashar Barakah Jackson on July 20, 1999, was a rapper from Canarsie, Brooklyn, who became the leading voice of New York’s drill scene before his life was cut tragically short. Drawing on the UK drill sound and citing influences like 50 Cent, DMX and Meek Mill, he developed a booming, gravel-voiced delivery over dark, bass-heavy beats that felt distinctly different from the mainstream New York rap of the time.
His breakout single «Welcome to the Party», boosted by A$AP Ferg’s support, and his 2019 debut mixtape Meet the Woo introduced his sound to a wider audience, followed by a run of hits including «Dior», «Mood Swings» and «Got It on Me». His momentum continued into early 2020 with Meet the Woo 2 and a high-profile feature on Travis Scott and JACKBOYS’ «Gatti».
Pop Smoke was shot and killed during a home invasion in Los Angeles on February 19, 2020, at the age of 20. His debut studio album, Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon, was released posthumously in July 2020 and became a commercial success, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential figures in bringing drill music into the mainstream of American hip-hop.
