Playboi Carti

Playboi Carti, born Jordan Terrell Carter in 1995 in Atlanta, Georgia, is one of the defining voices of modern trap and its melodic, minimalist offshoots. He started out as Sir Cartier before adopting his current name in 2013 and joining the Awful Records collective, where producer Ethereal shaped his earliest sound. A move to New York introduced him to fashion circles around A$AP Rocky, and by 2016 he had signed to Interscope through Rocky's AWGE imprint.

Carti built his reputation on an almost anti-lyrical style, favoring ad-libs, repetition, and mood over dense wordplay, a delivery closely tied to producer Pi'erre Bourne on tracks like «Magnolia» and «wokeuplikethis*». His self-titled mixtape and later projects pushed this stripped-down, hypnotic aesthetic further, influencing a generation of rappers drawn to atmosphere and vibe rather than traditional verse structure.

His later work leaned into darker, more distorted production sometimes labeled «rage» beats, expanding his range while keeping the same emphasis on texture and repetition. Frequent collaborators have included Pi'erre Bourne, Lil Uzi Vert, and figures within the A$AP Mob orbit, cementing his place as a genre-shifting figure in contemporary hip-hop.
