About the artist
OutKast is an American hip-hop duo from Atlanta, Georgia, formed by André «André 3000» Benjamin and Antwan «Big Boi» Patton, who met at Tri-Cities High School and signed to LaFace Records while still teenagers. Emerging alongside the Organized Noize production team and the wider Dungeon Family collective, the duo became central figures in establishing Atlanta and the broader American South as a major force in hip-hop at a time when the genre was dominated by the East and West Coasts.
Starting with Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik in 1994, OutKast built a reputation for constant sonic reinvention, moving through the funk- and soul-inflected sound of ATLiens and Aquemini into the genre-blurring experimentation of Stankonia, which produced landmark singles like «B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad)» and «Ms. Jackson». Their 2003 double album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, featuring the massive crossover hit «Hey Ya!», pushed the group even further into funk, rock and pop territory.
OutKast's willingness to blend Southern hip-hop with funk, psychedelia and pop experimentation, combined with André 3000's and Big Boi's distinct artistic voices, made them one of the most influential and critically acclaimed groups in hip-hop history, helping redefine what a rap album could sound like.
