Ol' Dirty Bastard

Ol' Dirty Bastard, born Russell Tyrone Jones, was an American rapper from Brooklyn, New York, and one of the founding members of the Wu-Tang Clan, the influential rap collective that redefined East Coast hip hop with their 1993 debut «Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)». Performing under a string of alter egos including Dirt McGirt and Big Baby Jesus, ODB was instantly recognizable for his off-kilter, semi-improvised flow, cracked singing voice, and a delivery that felt chaotic and unpredictable compared to his more technically precise Wu-Tang bandmates.

His solo debut, «Return to the 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version», showcased his singular style through tracks like «Shimmy Shimmy Ya» and «Brooklyn Zoo», cementing him as one of the most idiosyncratic voices in 1990s hip hop. He continued to appear on Wu-Tang group projects and solo efforts, including collaborations that brought his manic energy into R&B-adjacent territory, most famously his feature on Mariah Carey's «Fantasy» remix, which introduced his sound to a mainstream pop audience.

Beyond his music, ODB became a notorious tabloid figure due to his erratic public behavior and well-documented struggles with drugs and the law, which fed into both his myth and his artistic persona. He died in 2004, but his influence persists through Wu-Tang's enduring legacy and through his singular approach to rap performance, which prioritized raw, unfiltered personality over polish and remains referenced by hip hop artists as a touchstone for unpredictability and authenticity.
