Octavian

Octavian is a British rapper and singer born in Lille, France, in 1996, who was raised largely in South East London after moving there as a child with his mother. Of Angolan descent, his early life was marked by instability, including a period of homelessness as a teenager, before he found his way into music through a scholarship at the BRIT School, which he later left, feeling that creativity could not be taught. His genre-blending sound draws on rap, R&B, electronic textures and pop hooks, citing influences such as Bon Iver and James Blake, which gives his music an atmospheric, emotionally raw quality distinct from more straightforward UK rap.

He broke through with his 2018 mixtape SPACEMAN, which established his reputation for hazy, genre-defying production paired with confessional lyrics. Songs like «Papi Chulo», «Bet» and «Party Here» showcase his ability to move between aggressive rap delivery and melodic singing within a single track. His work helped position him as one of the more experimental voices to emerge from the London scene in the late 2010s.

Octavian's career was disrupted in 2020 by domestic violence allegations that led his label at the time to drop him and shelve a planned project. He continued releasing music independently through his own imprint. In 2023 he was cleared of the allegations. His catalogue remains notable for its willingness to blur genre lines and for a distinctive vocal texture that has influenced younger artists in the UK alternative rap and R&B space.
