N.W.A (Niggaz Wit Attitudes) formed in Compton, California, in the mid-1980s, uniting Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren, and DJ Yella (with Arabian Prince featured early on) into what became one of the most influential and controversial groups in hip-hop history. Their 1988 debut album, Straight Outta Compton, is widely credited with popularizing gangsta rap, delivering unflinching, street-level narratives of life in South Central Los Angeles.

The group's confrontational anthem «Fuck tha Police» drew national attention, including scrutiny from the FBI, cementing N.W.A's reputation as a voice of rebellion against police brutality and systemic neglect. Songs such as «Straight Outta Compton», «Gangsta Gangsta», and «Express Yourself» combined raw storytelling with Dr. Dre's pioneering production, laying the groundwork for West Coast hip-hop's dominance in the 1990s.

Internal tensions led to Ice Cube's departure in 1989 and the group's eventual dissolution in the early 1990s, but its impact endured through the solo careers of Dre, Cube, and Eazy-E, all of whom became defining figures in hip-hop. N.W.A's fearless, confrontational style permanently reshaped what rap music could address and how it could sound.
