About the artist
Neşet Ertaş (1938–2012) was a legendary Turkish folk musician, bağlama virtuoso and singer from the Kırşehir region of Central Anatolia. Son of the celebrated âşık Muharrem Ertaş, he grew up steeped in the Abdal music tradition of the region and became its most revered modern interpreter, blending it with broader Anatolian folk (türkü) forms. His playing style and vocal delivery — plaintive, restrained, deeply emotive — set a standard still studied by bağlama players today.
Ertaş spent years working in Germany as a labor migrant before eventually being embraced at home as a national treasure of Turkish folk music. Songs like «Gönül Dağı», «Yalan Dünya» and «Neredesin Sen» became staples of the Turkish folk repertoire, covered by generations of artists across genres, from folk to pop and rock. He is widely regarded as one of the most important custodians of Anatolian oral musical tradition in the 20th century.
In recognition of his cultural significance, Ertaş received Turkey's State Artist title and numerous honors before his death in 2012. His influence extends well beyond folk purists — his melodies and lyrics continue to be reinterpreted by contemporary Turkish musicians, cementing his place as a foundational figure in the country's musical heritage.
