About the artist
Nelly, born Cornell Iral Haynes Jr., is an American rapper who emerged from St. Louis, Missouri, in the late 1990s as part of the rap collective St. Lunatics before launching a highly successful solo career. His 2000 debut single «Country Grammar (Hot Shit)» introduced his melodic, hook-driven rap style and put St. Louis on the hip-hop map, opening doors for other Midwest artists.
Known for blending rap with pop, R&B and country influences, Nelly became one of the defining crossover artists of the early 2000s. Hits like «Ride wit Me», «Hot in Herre», «Dilemma» and «E.I.» showcased his knack for catchy, radio-friendly hooks, while later singles such as «Grillz» kept him at the top of the charts throughout the decade. His melodic delivery and pop sensibility made him one of the best-selling rap artists of his era.
Beyond music, Nelly helped popularize the St. Lunatics collective and paved the way for other St. Louis rappers to reach national audiences. His catalog remains a touchstone of early-2000s hip-hop and pop-rap crossover.
