About the artist

Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) was an American novelist and short-story writer, one of the central figures of the American Renaissance in 19th-century literature. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, into a family descended from Puritan settlers, Hawthorne drew heavily on New England history, guilt and moral ambiguity for the themes of his fiction. His ancestry included a judge from the Salem witch trials, a fact that haunted him and shaped much of his writing about sin, hypocrisy and repentance.

Hawthorne is best known for his novel «The Scarlet Letter» (1850), a study of adultery, shame and redemption in Puritan Boston, and for «The House of the Seven Gables» (1851). His short stories, including «Young Goodman Brown», established him as a master of allegory and psychological depth, often exploring the darker undercurrents beneath outwardly pious communities. He was closely associated with contemporaries such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Herman Melville, to whom he dedicated «Moby-Dick».

For much of his life Hawthorne supported himself through government appointments rather than his writing, including a post at the Custom House in Salem and later, through his friendship with President Franklin Pierce, the position of United States consul in Liverpool, England. His work remains foundational to American literature for its exploration of conscience, isolation and the legacy of Puritan morality.
