About the artist
Nas — born Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones on September 14, 1973, in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in the Queensbridge housing projects — is one of the most respected lyricists in hip-hop history. He first drew attention with a guest verse on Main Source's «Live at the Barbeque» before releasing his solo debut Illmatic in 1994, an album widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential records in the genre, built on dense, vivid storytelling about life in Queensbridge.
His father, jazz and blues musician Olu Dara, exposed him early to music, and Nas developed a densely literary, image-rich rhyme style that set him apart from more radio-friendly peers. Follow-up albums such as It Was Written pushed him toward greater commercial success while he continued exploring themes of urban struggle, black identity, and personal reflection across a long and celebrated catalog.
Beyond his solo work, Nas is known for high-profile collaborations and one of hip-hop's most famous rivalries, his feud with Jay-Z, which produced the scathing diss track «Ether». Songs like «N.Y. State of Mind», «The World Is Yours», and «One Love» remain touchstones of East Coast rap, and his influence extends across generations of MCs who cite his technical precision and narrative depth as a benchmark.
