Murubutu

Murubutu, stage name of Alessio Mariani (born July 27, 1975, in Reggio Emilia), is an Italian rapper known for a distinctive literary and narrative approach to hip-hop. He is a member of La Kattiveria, a rap collective from Reggio Emilia active since the early 1990s. Alongside his music career, Mariani works as a high school teacher of history and philosophy, a background that deeply informs his lyrical style.

Murubutu's chosen name is said to derive from «marabout», a figure in sub-Saharan African tradition believed to heal physical and social ills, reflecting his belief in the therapeutic power of words and culture. His rap is characterized by complex, richly literary lyrics and elaborate storytelling, often drawing on historical events, philosophical themes, and literature, earning him recognition as much as a cantastorie (storyteller) and cantautore (singer-songwriter) as a rapper.
