Missy Elliott, born Melissa Arnette Elliott in Portsmouth, Virginia, is one of the most innovative figures in hip-hop and R&B history. She emerged in the 1990s as part of the group Sista before launching a solo career and building a legendary partnership with producer Timbaland, with whom she crafted a futuristic, minimalist sound built on stuttering beats, unconventional samples and playful vocal effects that reshaped the sonic vocabulary of mainstream rap and R&B.
